It's (Almost) Christmas!
With a little over ten days to go, at the time of writing this blog post, Google's Santa Tracker is counting down the days to Christmas.  For those celebrating, if you are anything like me you will find it magical and fascinating how the man in red is able to make it to all the houses in the world and now thanks to Google you can follow live.

Novelty aside this year's experience has a strong emphasis on learning:

Santa’s Village, which opened on 1st December, allow visitors to learn code, put your geography knowledge to the test and learn different languages, greetings and traditions.  Each day in a similar fashion to an advent calendar, a new 'gift' is unlocked, and chocolate is replaced with an educational game.

I have selected my top three:

I wonder how Santa, his Elves and North American Aerospace Defense Command NORAD ensure that all the presents are delivered around the world in one night?

"Mr Towse, My Daughter is Glued to Her Phone!"

Increasingly, parents and teachers are asking me "How much screen time is OK?"And honestly, I do not have an answer for that question.  Maybe we should ask, "What is the quality of media accessed, how does it fit with family routine, and how do parents engage with devices and media?"

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) encourages parents to help their children develop healthy media use habits early on.  Devices such as iPhones and iPads have many purposes and are multi-functioning and, therefore, labelling their use as 'Screen-Time' might be misleading.  When we consider more and more schools are moving towards BYOD or 1:1 initiatives and are 'flipping the classroom,' we must also take into account that not all screen time is screen time.  


The Common Sense Census: Media Use by Tweens and Teens identifies four main categories of screen time:
  1. Passive consumption: watching TV, reading, and listening to music 
  2. Interactive consumption: playing games and browsing the Internet 
  3. Communication: video-chatting and using social media 
  4. Content creation: using devices to make digital art or music
It is arguable that there is no difference at all, and that screen-time is simply that, but we must consider that eating an apple diet does not necessarily make us healthier nor does drinking milk every day ensure that we will never break a bone.  With that said, I recommend striking a balance between the above activities and engaging in dialogue with your son or daughter in hopes of fostering a healthy relationship regarding online activities.

For anyone who knows me, you will know how much I love using emojis! And how my 'Face' is everywhere in school.

So, for anyone with an iPhone, the emoji keyboard is a must - if you're not using it, why not?  I have installed it on all of our school iPads, and I suggest you do the same.  This blog post is as a result of a recent unit of inquiry with grade two.  During a planning meeting, we found ourselves listening to and deciphering Katy Perry's Music Video, "Roar."

Although Apple has just released a new IOS update with it a feature in iMessage which turns certain words into emojis, LINE (here in Japan) has had this feature for some time.  The reference to LINE is inspired by a recent integration session with Mr E, one of our grade two teachers.  He was using LINE emojis in his classroom :)

How could I use this with students and staff in the classroom?

I was reading through the IBOs The Role of ICT in the PYP and this particular paragraph resonated with me....

"It is worthwhile to note that there will be opportunities for student-initiated, spontaneous inquiries into the use of ICT that are not directly related to any planned units of inquiry or single-subject areas. For example, a student contributing to a class blog may want to start his or her own blog as a personal reflection journal. These are valuable teaching and learning opportunities in themselves, and provide teachers and students with the opportunity to apply the pedagogy of the PYP to authentic, of-the-moment situations."

I would like to break this down further...a student contributing to...his or her own blog as a personal reflection journal.

The Power of Chromebooks Part II

1:1 in the 4th & Final Quarter

As the last Chromebook is delivered to Seisen Elementary School, I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on our 1:1 implementation plan and roll-out.  

It is not without the support and backing of an entire team does an implementation plan and roll out like this happen.  Be sure to have a plan in place.

The effective integration of ICT enhances the learner’s opportunity to connect globally and to explore different perspectives to understand evolving cultural and social norms. (IBO, 2011)

After a successful pilot scheme with grade three students back in November, it was decided to proceed with our elementary school initiative.  It was evident from staff and student feedback that Chromebooks were having an impact in the classroom and that action was required to make an impact throughout the elementary school as a whole.  Staff noticed that the need to reserve and check-out devices were lessening.  Chromebooks were accessible and on-hand when staff and students wanted them. It was becoming clear that in doing so, we were integrating technology and empowering students along the way.

From November to February, based on feedback and in-line with a school roll-out plan, Chromebooks were placed into grades four and five.  By this time, staff noticed that MacBooks were being used less for Google Apps for Education and more for Garageband and iMovie - this was great, staff and students were making choices between hardware and software.

ICT includes a variety of approaches to help connect learners within both the local and global community in order to empower learning. Learners’ awareness, use and appreciation of different ICT knowledge, skills and platforms should be developed. Furthermore, students should be encouraged to recognize that competency in ICT is a valuable life skill. (IBO, 2011)

The academic year ended with grade four being 1:1 and we were all but complete.  We would have to wait until after the summer vacation.  In the meantime, our grade six Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) programme had successfully launched to parents, with two parent information meetings. Could we dare to believe that, come September, we might we 1:1 in grades three through six?!

Back-to-school and the final batch of Chromebooks were on order and with a confirmed shipping date the dream of being 1:1 was slowly becoming a reality.   Meanwhile, in grade six, Ms. Naini, Mr O'shea, Mr Hughes and of course grade six students' were getting underway with BYOD.

Recently, I have been analysing and evaluating the potential of virtual reality and 360-degree cameras and looking at ways they might be used in classrooms to help enhance teaching and learning.  Is virtual reality the future of education? And will we all be soon walking around school with cardboard attached to our faces?  We must consider the possibility that this is another passing craze in technology and we must take into account that this might all be over before Christmas!!

Previously, I have blogged about using virtual reality to bring the outside inside, and I believe it may be the more obvious of examples, but I would say it is because it is probably the most powerful way of enhancing and extending teaching and learning. We must ask ourselves will virtual reality allow for a more student-centered learning environment. On your next field trip take a 360-degree camera with you and submerse your students, their parents and the wider school community in your experience!  This blog post started with a 360-degree image of our sports day and is an example of how you might use this technology to bring a more empowering learning experience to your school trips and events.

YouTube: The Power of a Playlist

The idea behind this blog post is to demonstrate:

  • How you can use YouTube in the classroom
  • How the "Power of a Playlist" can change the way in which we teach and increase our students' engagement in learning
  • How you can use such a powerful learning tool, with relative ease...

After listening to a fantastic and inspiring keynote speech from Professor John Hattie, the "power of a playlist" required an update!  During Prof. J. Hattie's address, he talked us through his latest findings and reiterated previous evidence: what works and what doesn't.  One thing was clear from his time in front of us 'except the evidence' he talked about the reasons underpinning these influences.

"Music in the classroom has very little effect on student learning:  Simply putting music in the background is pointless.' It is just 'white noise'" (J. Hattie, 2016).

Fun and engaging videos

Often we browse the internet looking for that 'perfect' stimulus for tomorrow's lesson.  Choosing the right video can enhance many a lesson.  Visual and highly entertaining.  Videos can engage the learner simply because it is on YouTube.  Carefully written questions coupled with
creative and engaging activities will enable students to deepen their learning.

Playlists
We all learn in different ways.  We are not necessarily a visual or auditory learner nor are we kinesthetic! In fact, "learning styles have very little effect on learning," however, providing video alternatives to the reading homework could pay off for students (when used effectively and with purpose). You are able to create playlists, either to supplement previously provided material or as an extension. A playlist puts it all into an easy, well-organized format for student consumption.

Engage your students in digital dialogue.  Have them do something with the music or videos and don't just provide white noise!

Some other great ways to spark learner interest and keep students engaged...
  • Spark a lively discussion via student questions:
    •  Is it a boy or a girl?
    • Why does the teenager start the music video on the floor?
    • Is the teenager in school, hospital or at home?
    • What has caused the scattered papers on the floor?
  • Student paced learning
    • Students are able to consolidate learning at their own pace.  Review many times, even after the lesson is over.  Build a deeper understanding and develop a sense of independence about a task, topic or concept.
  • Embed a YouTube Video into a Google Form for instant feedback.  I was able to create and use this particular form with grade five.  
    • Flip your classroom
      • The lesson does not end simply because it's 3:20 and the school bell rang.
        • Record the start of a unit lesson or a summative assessment and save them for future viewing or stream live to YouTube using Google Hangout Air.  If you have a student home sick, YouTube makes it easy to send the link or embed to a blog.

The Power of a Chromebook


After a successful pilot scheme in grade three, Chromebooks can now be found in grades four and five here at Seisen International School.

More and more classrooms I visit seem to be opting for a Google ChromeBook instead of the iPad!  I have found these three 'game changers' the main reasons for this change:
  1. Price
  2. Collaboration
  3. Management of Device, Apps & Extensions
The Google Chromebook is among the top three best-selling laptops (at the time of writing this post), and I can certainly see why this is the case.  I, now, use a Chromebook for school purposes. It's fully-functional in less than 10 seconds and contains a battery life of up to eight hours. It should certainly be your number one choice when considering your next computer purchase!

Transform Your Teaching with Chromebooks?

Here at Seisen International School we use ICT as a tool for teaching and learning.  Students use technology to collaborate, communicate, create, organize and investigate during a Unit of Inquiry. Having access to a ChromeBook has transformed the T&L process in homerooms and has meant that the Media Centre MacBooks are now being used to create a Garageband and iMovie projects instead of just accessing Google Drive.  Units last six weeks and during this time students and staff use ICT tools when they are 'Getting Started,' 'Investigating,' 'Making Connections' and 'Going Further'.

I am not saying technology, directly, changes the way in which I or other staff members teach, but the feedback is positive and the message is clear: technology can certainly make a difference when used effectively and with a purpose.  We now have access to information like never before.  With around 40000 search queries per second, the ease of collaboration is only getting better and the ability to create professional standard pieces for comes at very little cost. What does this mean? That instruction is no longer limited to standing in front of a class and writing on a board.

Why should I have devices in my classroom?

Price

At a sticker price beginning at $177 dollars, they are a very cost effective way of getting devices into the hands of students. You are able to get five of these compared to the cost of ONE MacBook!

Collaboration & Feedback

Students are able to create documents, spreadsheets and presentations, and share it with their peers, teachers and parents with the click of a button. As previously mentioned, the ease of collaboration is only getting better, as Google Apps for Education allows real-time feedback. I use tools like Google Forms to spark the interest of students from the outset and use a form for real time assessment. Finally, each student now has an equal voice, because Chromebooks allow for digital dialogues.

Management of Device, Apps & Extensions

Chrome OS allows IT networks managers to push and quickly deploy apps and extensions to the whole elementary school without the need to wait two weeks.


I am very excited about deploying Chromebooks into our Elementary School and I am looking forward to ways we can integrate technology as a tool to support and enhance teaching and learning.

World Creative Writing Month

The Night Zookeeper Needs You!



Unless you have been living in a bubble during the last month, then you will be fully aware of the Night Zookeeper's Global Writing Challenge.  If, however, you have been in a "Zoo Free Zone" then you have missed out one of the biggest global education events of the year!   Schools across the world competed to write as many words as possible in 21 days of competition. 

Working with schools in Japan as the official ambassador I was privileged to read some outstanding pieces of writing, most of them having been written outside of school.  The response from the schools in Japan was amazing, and the atmosphere a little closer to home here at Seisen was unbelievable.  It was the talk of the school.  Our girls arrived at the media centre at 8 am each day to spend 15 minutes typing before the morning bell.  They even spent recess inside the media centre typing before completing their homework using the Magical World of the Night Zoo!

With an initial word target of two million being crushed inside the first week of competition, the final word count reached 7 Million!! 7 Million...

What does that even look like? 

Question: How many words in total make up the 'The Harry Potter Series' (all seven books combined)?

Answer: A little over 1 million.  

So you would need 7 sets of the series! That's 49 Harry Potter Books....

Digital Storytelling Part I

Part 1

Welcome to part one of a series of digital storytelling blog posts.  I aim to share with you different ways you can get students to extend their creative minds using some apps to create digital stories.

A scene with props and characters....ready to record!
Sock Puppets allows you create your very own #lipsync video and showcase them on YouTube. If you are a Google Apps for Education (GAFE) school, then you are already familiar with uploading student work to YouTube and using this platform to showcase.

With puppets, props, scenery and a background;  creating a 30-second digital story has never been easier.  With a differing choice of socks (characters), 11 unique backgrounds, and 16 props (look out for the red and yellow props) students are:

  1. able to retell the same story in so many different permutations
  2. create unique stories effortlessly.

Getting Started:
Once you have selected your character, props, and scenery, you are ready to hit the record button, and the puppets will do the rest.  Sock Puppets means students can work together, use multiple puppets and create hilarious dialogue.

Currently, I am working with grade 3 during their performing arts unit of inquiry, and we have been using technology as a tool for learning to tell Knock-Knock Jokes using Sock Puppets.  Students decided that telling jokes in front of an audience is a performing art, with this students devised a script using Google Docs while using an iPad to tell jokes before using YouTube to give students an audience to their learning.


Planning
  • Planning for a digital story is a key to success 
    • What are your students trying to achieve by using this app?
    • What message do your students want to convey using this app? 
    • How are students going to get there?
Have a go at...
  • Creating a story where students introduce themselves.  Great as a start of the year activity.  
  • Curriculum / UOI focus - such as introducing a key concept, central idea or explaining something in art, music or PE.
  • Explain a classroom essential agreement or daily routine.
  • Tell a story about a notable part of your life.
  • Animate / Retell a poem.

The Power of an Image

Are your students always enthusiastic about learning new things?

How do teachers introduce a new unit?

Using an image to provoke class discussion is something teachers have been doing for many years, but how about sparking an in-depth discussion with your class using said image?  This blog post is written to show how Google Apps, carefully chosen stimulus, and good questions can spark a good discussion and make them curious to start learning a new unit of inquiry.

During a recent GAFE Summit, Kaori Sensei introduced me to this idea of connection.  Are students able to make a connection to the image in question?


Google Apps

I believe that using tech should not be used as a gimmick, and that should be purposeful.  Technology is a tool and should be used as such; to support and enhance teaching & learning.

 With that said, I have taken the above image and embedded it in a Google Form.  Often students are reluctant to feedback in front of their peers, but with the use of this form the feedback is anonymous and the quality of their work is much better.  I often use SEE  THINK WONDER with students to provoke discussion?  Most recently with my grade five class.


Next step: Use Google Sheets analyse your class responses and see what it looks like as a pie chart.

The Phenomena

The phenomena of social media and the unfortunate instances I see and hear about more and more cause me to worry.  During our first planning meeting of the unit, several weeks ago, I was reading articles that were filled with alarming figures and disturbing statistics.  With this said, it is units like this current grade five one that fill me with hope.

From the outset, I was eager to be a part of this Unit of Inquiry.  I wanted the girls to see for themselves how social media, the news and celebrity icons often promote the idea that you must attain a certain "look" or meet a "standard" to be beautiful. Most disappointing is that they encourage this via photoshop and digital enhancement.

Student  Question: Does social media impact on body image?

Student Provocation: Spending a lot of time on social media sites, such as Instagram can make girls self-conscious of their body image.

During the time spent with students, they were highly engaged and provoked to think more deeply about their own perceptions of themselves and others - with 90% coming to see the more natural image would give them a better sense of feeling and enhance self-esteem as opposed to the image that had been edited with PhotoShop Express, which most students branded as fake.

I think that photoshopping a picture isn’t the correct thing to do because you need to accept the way you are because you are perfect the way you are and how you were created.

Because of photoshop, people think that the photoshopped images are more beautiful and real. However, the photoshopped image does not represent the real person.


Surprisingly, after I saw the difference I actually preferred my natural look!


Our current unit discusses self-esteem and body image, this task has made me realise that we do not need to use photoshop apps to feel good about ourselves.


We can use it to make little tweaks however I disagree with using photoshop to change your whole face.

    Global Citizen - How Internationally Minded Are You?

    I have been somewhat delaying the publishing of this blog post for a couple of weeks now. I've been using the time to reflect on my personal and professional approach to being internationally minded. What does internationally minded LOOK like?

    Using Word Foto App to transform our School Logo!

    Thanks to Ms. Debbie Tai and Ms. Natalie Kunst (our IB PYP workshop leaders) as well as my fellow teachers and friends, I enjoyed two great days of professional development.

    The vibe in the room was electric! It was a fantastic opportunity to really examine my own practice as well as connect with my fellow colleagues on a deeper level.

    In groups, we analysed our current practices (as a school and department as well as the individual thoughts). We were given time to work in grade level teams to plan learning engagements to support the development of International-Mindedness within units of inquiry and, being the ICT integrator, it got me thinking!

    What resources and strategies do I use in teaching and learning, and then convey to homeroom teachers?

    Grade One students have been exploring how celebration and tradition are expressed.  I am privileged and proud to be a part of such a fantastic unit and true example of being internationally minded.  Check out our Padlet; we would love to hear from you!


    Another thing I was able to think long and hard about was the power of a name!  Take a couple of minutes out of your day and think about your name.

    Happy New Year!

    I hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable winter break and are looking forward to the challenges of 2016!  I have just returned from a fabulous holiday to England where I was able to spend quality time with family and catch up with friends.

    I decided that starting the year with a post that highlights the best of 2015 would be fitting, so here are my top 3 posts of 2015!

    Blogger - Steps to Success 

    We are now blogging in the elementary school and have moved to an e-platform.  Initially, grade level blogs were set up as an alternative form of communication with parents. However, we are moving away from the more 'traditional' newsletter.  After the successful launch of the blog, we opened the blogs to a wider audience and are now connecting with classrooms near and far! (See Global Collaboration)

    World Record Attempt?

    Throughout the first half of the school year, several students made appointments with Ms Carnright (Seisen's Elementary School Counsellor) to discuss their online & social media activity. It was apparent that they were concerned about e-safety, specifically their interactions with strangers via gaming websites (e.g., Minecraft) and phone applications (e.g. LINE).

    Several parents approached me with their concerns regarding their daughter's ever increasing use of technology and their own 'ignorance' regarding how to control and monitor internet use.

    Global Collaboration

    The response to Grade One's Padlet was simply amazing!  Grade One's Unit of Inquiry is exploring how celebrations and traditions are expressions of shared belief and values.

    Mr P_ICT was running Christmas Around the World, and we agreed that this would be a great platform to connect with classrooms around the globe.

    Subsequently, during a planning meeting, I decided to create the Padlet to facilitate inquiry with Grade One. With the help of Twitter, we were able to share ideas and collaborate to extend our students' understanding of the central idea.

    As a result of the Padlet's success, we are extending the project into 2016. We welcome you to join us in our learning journey!
